BAPTISMAL PREPARATION - Provides a required one-hour instructional program to prepare parents for the baptism of their child. During this class, the history of baptism, the baptismal rite, symbols associated with baptism, and the role of the Sponsor are reviewed. Classes are conducted usually on every other Sunday of the month at 2:30 P.M. in the Rectory Meeting Room.

BEREAVEMENT COMMITTEE - The Purpose of this committee is to offer consolation to families grieving the loss of a loved one. Coordinators call from a list of parish volunteers to provide food and, in some instances, service for the gathering of the families after the funeral. Committee volunteers meet with family members to plan the Liturgy.

COFFEE HOUR - Coffee Hour is held on Sunday after the 9:00 A.M. Mass in the school cafeteria where volunteers provide coffee, cocoa, and donuts for parishioners during the school year. The Coffee Hour Chairperson schedules the volunteers. Supplies are provided by the parish.


EVANGELIZATION - Promotes the activites of the Archdiocese regarding evangelization by reaching out to the un-churched and the inactive catholics.

HOME AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION - The Home and School Association is an organization of parents formed to promote understanding and good-will among members of the school community. The organization facilitates the Wreath Drive, hosts an annual open house, and meets twice per year. In addition, room mothers assist teachers with seasonal parties and Field Days, providing treats. The association buys a gift for the school each year and these have included a laminating machine, book binder,  and new cafeteria tables. The association also hosts the Staff Luncheon during Catholic Schools Week.

HOSPITALITY - Hospitality Ministers are positioned at each church door to hand out bulletins after each Mass. Families often choose this ministry because they can involve older children in helping and by doing so, involve then further in church life. Volunteers are scheduled once every two or three months.

LADIES' GUILD - The purpose of the Guild is to 1) Promote fun gatherings that bring people together for fellowship and entertainment (i.e. card parties, potlucks, etc.); 2) utilize talents of members, generate money-making activities to defray costs of church flowers, candles, etc.  Membership is open to all women and meetings occur when needed.


MAINTENANCE VOLUNTEERS - Helps with odd jobs around the parish grounds when called upon.

MARRIAGE PREPARATION - Volunteers meet with engaged couples to discuss various areas of communication.

MISSION OUTREACH - Mission Statement: "The Catholic Parish of St. Bernard, keenly aware of the missionary nature of the Church and in gratitude to almighty God for the benefits of the Catholic faith and progress of its own parish, has adopted Christ The King Parish, a mission parish of the Glenmary Home Missioners. To this end, St. Bernard Parish will make an annual donation of $2,400 toward expenses of its adopted mission. Christ The King Parish, while continuing its own efforts toward stability, with gratitude, promises to remember the pastor and the people of St. Bernard Parish when they gather for worship and will keep them informed of the progress of Christ The King Parish as a means of stimulating its missionary concern."

Meetings are held Tuesday at 7:00 P.M.  as needed (usually every two to three months) in the Rectory Meeting Room.


OFFERTORY FAMILIES - This service group provides an opportunity for families to participate in the liturgy by presenting the Offertory Gifts at the Mass of their preference. Due to the large response to this service effort, family commitment is only 1 to 2 times per year. The Coordinator of Offertory Families schedules the families (usually on a semi-annual basis), distributes the schedule to the families, and on occasion, handles scheduling conflicts. The coordinator also works together with those who call the families each week to remind them of their commitment.

PARISH NURSE PROGRAM - The Parish Nurse Program organizes volunteer nurses from the parish to promote holistic health within the parish community (holistic health refers to a process of wholeness that exists when there is harmony between the body, mind, and spirit). The Parishes Nurses are available every 4th weekend of the month.

RIGHT OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION (RCIA) - This is the process for persons interested in becoming a Catholic Christian. The RCIA process lasts from September to Pentecost. Meetings are held every Monday from 7:30 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. in the Rectory Meeting Room. Presentations for these meetings are prepared by the RCIA team. Active parishioners are recuted to be Sponsors for the candidates. After the Rite of Acceptance, celebrated in December, the candidates for Baptism and Full Communion come to Sunday Mass to hear the Word of God and are dismissed to participate in a discussion about what they have heard. After Easter the discussion takes place after Mass each Sunday until Pentecost. Baptism and Profession of Faith for Full Communion takes place Holy Saturday evening.

SACRISTANS - This group provides volunteers who clean the sacred vessels, holy water fonts, sanctuary and sacristies. They change the alter linens, take care of candles, server robes, organize decorating the church for Christmas, organizes the spring cleaning of the church, prepares the church for Holy Week services and feast days.


SENIORS CLUB - This club meets monthly for fun and enrichment and provides volunteers who count the money from the weekend collections. The Club provides retired parishioners (over 55) a social event and provides the Parish Team with feedback on the viewpoints of older parishioners. Meetings are held at 2:00 P.M. on the third Tuesday of each month, September through May, in the Rectory Meeting Room. Refreshments are served at all meetings.

SOCIAL ACTION - The purpose of the Social Action Group is to serve the Springfield Community by providing the leadership and inspiration necessary to understand and respond to current issues of social justice and peace. Objectives are to: 1) Serve the parishes by working with pastors, parish staff, and parish councils; 2) Serve as leaders in helping the community respond to social issues; 3) Assist in better communications with people in direct services. Members are selected from the Springfield Catholic Constituencies: St. Bernard, St. Joseph-St. Raphael, St. Teresa, Mercy Medical Center, Catholic Central High School, Catholic Social Services, St. Vincent DePaul District Council, Office of Social Action and World Peace. Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of January, March, May, July, September, and November at 7:00 P.M. at the St. Raphael Parish Center. St. Bernard's Social Action Group started a Neighborhood Association called "The New Lagonda Neighborhood Association". The group is also involved with Springfield's "J.A.M." (Justice, Action, and Mercy).

ST. BERNARD CEMETERY ASSOCIATION - The St. Bernard Cemetery Association exists to serve the needs of families who share our Catholic faith. Those wishing to discuss matters relating to the St. Bernard Cemetery should call the Rectory. St. Bernard Cemetery is located at 27 W. Home Rd., Springfield, Ohio.
ST. BERNARD EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP FUND - Yearly sale with monthly drawings - $500 1st prize; $100 2nd and 3rd prizes; $50 4th, 5th and 6th prizes; $25 7th and 8th prizes; $100 awarded to the seller of each 1st prize winner. The proceeds from this activity are used to provide scholarships and assistance to students attending St. Bernard School and Catholic Central High School.

ST. VINCENT DePAUL SOCIETY - In the tradition of Frederick Ozanam, the society's founder, this group makes hospital visits, provides volunteers to work at the society's Thrift Store, prepares food baskets for the needy at Christmas time and is on-call for assistance to the needy.


TRANSPORTATION - This service group privides a ride for parishioners who are able and who want to come to Mass on the weekend, but who are unable to find transportation. Volunteers receive a schedule and are assigned one weekend per month to provide round-trip transportation to church.

VISITORS TO THE HOME BOUND - This group organizes visitors to bring flowers and cards to the home bound at Christmas and Easter.


WELCOME COMMITTEE - This committee sends welcome cards to new members of the parish and invites the new members to be involved in the parish.

YOUTH GROUP - This group plans activities, fun things and service projects for the junior high and high school parish youth.
